Personal Addiction Counseling

More often than not, chemical (prescription and illegal drugs and/or alcohol) addictions start with experimental use in social or isolated situations. For some people, use becomes more frequent. As time passes, a person may feel the need to use more of the chemical to get their desired high, and soon may need the chemical to simply feel “good.”

The same holds true for behavioral addictions, such as gambling, pornography, or sex & love addiction. What starts as an occasional indulgence can quickly consume your life and hijack your brain’s neurochemical reward system in ways that mirror chemical addiction.

Chemical and behavioral addiction symptoms include:

  • Feeling the need to use or perform the behavior regularly, which can be daily or multiple times a day
  • Having intense urges for the chemical or behavior
  • Over time, needing more of the chemical or behavior to get the same effect
  • Making certain that you maintain a supply of the chemical or are able to act out behaviorally
  • Not meeting obligations and work responsibilities
  • Doing things you wouldn’t normally do to get the chemical, such as stealing
  • Being willing to give up important relationships, goals and values in order to get the chemical or act out behaviorally
  • Focusing more and more time and energy one getting and using the chemical or doing the behavior
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using the chemical, or when unable to act out behaviorally
  • Failed attempts to quit using the chemical or behavior

If you can relate to any of the above symptoms, it may be time to consider addiction counseling.
